Where Does She Get Those Marvelous Toys?

Lately I have been sorting coupons on the train to and from work.  Its actually a nice relaxing exercise but, almost always, someone asks me about couponing.  Among the questions asked are often “Are you one of  THOSE people?”  “How do you keep track of all of it?”  “Where do you get them all?” and  “Does it really work?”

I have been doing this a bit less time than other people but I will try to answer each question with a post on this blog.  The first one I want to address with you is. “Where do you get all those coupons!?!?!”

I have two main sources for my coupons, the Internet and publications.  In addition, I occasionally trade coupons with a friend from my office.

(1) Publications.

Sunday Paper.  By far the best publication to get coupons is the insert in your Sunday news paper.  Now most areas are served by more than one paper and not all papers serving your area will have the same insert.  For example, my area is served by both the Chicago Sun Times and the Chicago Tribune.  Often these paper’s get different inserts and sometimes the same inserts have different coupons.  In the past few weeks I have been buying both to be sure I get the full variety of coupons.

Magazines. Second to the Sunday paper are magazines.  Many magazines sport the occasional coupon but the best magazine for coupons I have found so far, is called “All You” which is sold in most Wal-Mart stores and has a website (HERE).

(2) Internet.

The Internet seems to have overtaken paper publications as the best place to find coupons.  Coupons can be found on the web in virtually every corner (get it…”virtually”  I said there would humor folks…didn’t say it would be good humor).

Independent sites.  There are third party sites like the one for All You Magazine which offer online coupons.  One of the best I have found is Coupons.com (HERE).

Store sites. Store who offer coupons often post them on their websites.  Many stores, like Jewel (HERE) and Dominick’s (HERE) offer specific coupons with their rewards cards.  Other stores, like Target (HERE), simply offer their coupons to everyone.

Manufacturer Sites. Many manufacturers also post coupons directly on their sites. Sometimes these coupons are of higher value than the ones in the Sunday paper insert.  Here are a few manufacturers who post coupons on their websites:

Tyson

This Site.  There are other sites and facebook pages which talk about coupons.  Often items are spammed throughout the day.  Unfortunately, the demands of my “day job” won’t let me participate that actively.  BUT I will be making a daily and /or weekly post with coupons I find about the Internet so you can catch these offers too. A few I found in my travels today are:
Well those are currently my main streams of  coupons.  I note that there are sites out there that will sell you coupons (called “cutting services”) and I am honestly not sure how I feel about it.  For now I will just stick with the above.  Please chime in below if you know of a good source for coupons.

**Double Coupon Days!!* K MART

Alright folks, last one for this morning (but this one is a biggie), as I am heading out for the day.

Shopping at stores that double coupons is one of the ways that those people on TLC's Extreme Couponing manage such great savings.  Unfortunately very few stores in the Chicago area ever offer double coupon days (check your area for stores that do).

One store that does is K MART!  They only do it on occasion and when they do there are many restrictions (man they are gong to love me coming in with my two binders full of coupons).  Here are the details:
  • Double Coupons only happening at SELECT K Mart Stores (check HERE to see if there is a store in your area).
  • Coupons only double up to $0.99 -- This means if you have a coupon for $0.65 off a product, you wont get $1.30 off the product, only $0.99.
  • You can only participate in this if you have the K Mart Shop your way rewards card.  The card is FREE and you can get it in store or HERE.
  • Coupon doubles ends 6/25.

Petsmart Shopping Trip

We talked (HERE) about Singles, Doubles, Triples and home run coupon scores.  Most of the time I am looking for Doubles and Triples and that elusive Home Run.  Singles often don't meet my mark (more on that in future posts) so I don't consider them worth doing.  A coupon for Smart One Meals does not get the blood pumping.  Two coupons?  ok I am listening.

Well tonight I hit a double and I am pretty proud!

Here are the results of my shopping trip to Petsmart:

My Petsmart told me that they regularly sold Pawsafe cleaners for $3.99 a bottle.  But they are discontinued now for $.99 a bottle. With the coupon mentioned earlier this week (HERE) for $1 off of one, they were practically FREE (had to pay the sales tax).

So here is how it went:

$3.99 x 10 = $39.99
Clearance price of $2.00 off a bottle x 10 = $9.99
Use $1.00 off manufacturer coupons found HERE x10 = the store owing you $.09.

Yep.  Caused a bit of a register meltdown.  Turns out they just don't accomodate people like us who walk out with them owing us money.  So the register person politely asked me to pay the $.69 sales tax, and I did so (with a big ole grin on my face the whole time).

Savings Tally: $10

BWAWAWAHAHAHAHA!  This is going to be fun!

Couponing Basics: Making the System Work for YOU!

“I don’t use coupons!  The companies put them out there so we will spend more money!”  Yep you are right.  Coupons are a form of advertising.  The manufacturers know that if you try the product you might like it, and if you like the product you might buy it again.  You may even tell your friends about it so their little product has that word of mouth buzz all advertisers crave.  But is there a way to turn the tables and get a good deal?  I think there is if you stick to some simple rules.

Singles are Good Doubles are Better!

I think of coupons like a baseball diamond.  Let’s say you were hungry and budget conscious.  So rather than eating out you decide to stop off at a Target superstore and grab a frozen dinner.  In fact, you will grab enough for the week so you don’t have to stop off each night on your way home.  Now if target had frozen dinner’s on sale then you might think, “Wow, that is awesome I’ll get those!”  A coupon is just a sale with pre planning.  Rather than leaving it up to fate, some people enjoy the saving so much that they are willing to do a bit of snipping and stick the paper in their wallets for the next time they need frozen food.  Coupons can be found in your Sunday paper insert or on the internet.  Many times stores put up coupons like this one from Target: Target Smart One Coupon

Which offers $5 off of the purchase of 10 Smart Ones frozen meals.  Since smart ones typically run about $1.99 a box at Target, your cost would regularly be $19.90 for 10.  If you use the coupon, you could get $5 off of that price dropping you down to $14.90 or $1.48 a box.  Hey that is pretty good!

But what if we could do better?  We can.

Coupons generally come in two varieties, Store made (like the one from target above) and manufacturer made, like this one: Manufacturer Smart Ones Coupon

Which will save you $4.00 when you purchase 10 boxes of Smart Ones?  When you use a manufacturer’s coupon at a store like Target, the store collects all of the coupons and turns them back into the manufacturer for payment.  This means that manufacturer coupons are as good as cash to the retailers.  As a result, most stores will let you add a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon together on the same item (called “stacking”).

Where our single hit of a coupon bringing the transaction total down to $14.90 was good, our double brings your $10 boxes of Smart Ones down to just $10.90!  That is just $1.09 a box!  Feeding myself for just over $1 a meal is not too shabby.

In addition to stacking coupons most stores will allow you to take the coupon off of sale priced items as well (unless the terms on the coupon expressly forbid it).

So we have two ways to get a double on our Smart Ones:

(1) Manufacturer coupon + store coupon = Double; or
(2) Manufacturer coupon or store coupon + Sale = Double.

But can we do better?  Sometimes we can.

Triples are Awesome!

If stacking coupons or staking a coupon with a sale is a double, then a triple would be when you hit all three.  This is when you should start to consider buying in larger quantities because the savings really start to add up.  Let’s go back to our Smart Ones example.  What if Target put the meals on sale for $1.75 each + our manufacturer coupon + our Target coupon?  Well then your total price would be: $7.75!!! or $.75 a box.

“Wait, wait, wait…” you say, “the store won’t put it on sale, because they know that there are coupons out there.”  You are correct, it doesn’t happen often but it does occur.  Part of getting the most out of this is jumping on these deals when they come up so that you don’t have to pay more for the same merchandize later.  So when a triple comes up, we should seriously consider it.  (I will be looking this weekend to see if Target puts Smart Ones on Sale.)

In addition to stacking two types of coupons + a sale, there is other ways (though less common) to get a triple.  One way is when you can add store coupon + manufacturer coupon + retailer perks (such as Register Rewards from Walgreens or Extra Care Bucks from CVS). Retail perks don’t really offer you money off of your present transaction, but instead give you dollars towards future transactions. It’s fairly rare that a store which offers a regular reward program, will also offer a store coupon.

Rather, the last triple example is far more common.  That is when you can stack a Sale + Manufacturer Coupon + Retailer Perks.  For example, Two weeks ago Cover Girls New line of cosmetics (called “Naturals”) dropped a coupon in the P&G insert for $5.00 off when you buy 2.  This past Sunday, CVS put CG Mascara on Sale for $8 and Lipstick on Sale for $7 and when you spend $15 you get $5.00 back in Easy Care Bucks

Sale of $15 for 2 Cover Girl Naturals - $5.00 ECB - $5.00 Coupon from 6/5 P&G insert = $5 for a brand new Lipstick and mascara.  $2.50 each?  Yeah I will do that.

So our triples are:

(1)   Manufacturer Coupon + Store Coupon + Sale;
(2)   Manufacturer Coupon + Store Coupon + Retailer Perks; or
(3)   Manufacturer Coupon + Store Sale + Retailer Perks.

This is where we get into serious savings people.

But brace yourself there is a holy grail…

But Home Plate is Where You Want to Be!

Well its pop quiz time!  If you have been paying attention then you should know what a home run will be!  Post your guess below!

Awsome People

I looked at my fiancé' and stated firmly..."It was NOT my fault!"

Maybe it was because he has heard this from me before, or maybe it was because these were the first words out of my mouth when I came home from work, but he stared at me with googily eyes (O.o) and asked.. "WHAT is not your fault?"

I explained that I was on the train quietly sorting coupons, when this lady said "Hey, are you one of those extreme couponers?!?!!?"  At that most eyes around were on me.

Me: "Umm not really extreme.  I mean I don't get thousands of dollars in groceries for pennies, but yeah I do use coupons."
Train Rider: "yeah but you do it"
Me: "yes"
Train Rider:  "Well, HOW do you do it?"

From there my train car had a chat about coupons, stacking, rules, and generally how things work.  There was even a note taken or two and comments tossed in from other train riders who were listening.

So to the nice Metra riding lady, I say thanks for listening last night, to the people in the car I say sorry if the conversation got a bit loud as people asked questions and to the rest of you I say, yep that is why I decided to do this.

To coupon or not to coupon...that is the question!

Blink…blink…blink… yep the cursor is definitely mocking me.  Its saying “are you really one of those blog people?”  Honestly I don’t know.  This thing started by watching that show on TLC (Extreme Couponing), where people get $600+ worth of groceries for less than $10.  I found myself sitting there thinking.. ”yeah that is great and all but who WANTS a room full of toothpaste and toilet paper?”  The small two bedroom home I share with my fiancĂ©, Pablo, would never put up with it. Our two huskies, Harley Quinn and Rand would never put up with it.  Even the cat would look at me funny.
*House pictured
here is waaaaaaaaay
cooler looking than my own

But what if we could take that stuff and give it away?  I think one of the people followed on EC did just that.  Can someone really do this couponing thing well enough that they can open up a type of food bank?  Could I?  Is it possible (on a smaller scale) just to do this well enough to make an actual difference in the grocery budgets of the people around me?  It seemed to me that this might be an idea worth trying out.

Now I want to pause here to let you know that I am not insane.  I know that most couponing people don’t save 90% or more on their grocery trips, nor do I expect to save anywhere near that. Also those people devote upwards of 40 hours a week to these deals and I already have a job.  So what was I going to do?  I decided to experiment with couponing over this summer to see how much I can save and how much time it would cost.  My coupon experiment will consist of the following:

*Not Really easy

  • Getting Coupons;
  • Organizing the materials for use;
  • Purchasing “deals” with the coupons; and
  • Tracking the savings and the time spent getting it.

Easy right?

I started clipping coupons, and do you know what?  There are a deal or two to be had out there!  Every time I made a score, I felt pretty good about it and even boasted about it at the office.  That is when one plucky co-worker (yeah you know who you are) decided I should write a blog about the deals I find.  When I brought up the idea to Pablo he just smiled and said, "yes, you must use your powers for good."

So here I am, with the mocking cursor just waiting for me to decide whether I have the talent to do this. I can promise you this, when I find a decent deal I will post it here for all of you to get as well.  So follow me for the next three months and lets find out whether this couponing thing actually works at all or whether the cursor is right.

Blink…Blink…Blink…
